In 1870 Joseph and William York discovered granite ledges just west of present day Route 20 and Blandford Road while riding to Hudson, NY which started the Granite Industry in Becket and Otis with finishing taking place in the two granite mills (upper and lower) in Chester Factory Village. The lower works, Chester Granite Saw Property now conserved by the Hilltown Hikers #keephilltownhistoryalive
