Located directly on the popular travel route known as the Jacob’s Ladder Trail, Boulder park was one of the first multiple season, day-use destinations to be developed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the western part of the state. The park was constructed between 1934 and 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to offer swimming, picnicking, and hiking in the summer months. In response to the new national interest in skiing, winter use was also created: a level skiing practice area for beginners was laid out and ski trails were cut in the park. The sport of skiing had reached New England in the late 1920s and under President Franklin D. Roosevelt the CCC began constructing ski trails on public land in 1933. The first trails were laid out on Mt. Mansfield in Vermont in 1933 and those in Boulder Park were begun the following year.
“Parkitecture” is everywhere here and includes a an Accessible Nature Trail.
