Back in the day after the last fire at the Chester Granite and Polishing Works in 1946 and the following abandonment and bankruptcy, life carried on on Emery Street. The piles of machinery left on site that was not scrapped was bulldozed into the railroad ditch alongside the steep mountain. Today, we have a treasure trove of artifacts buried here along with twisted metal and scrap. The current project is now uncovering all this machinery including this motor from the polishing building. Using a tripod lift built by James Higby, crow bars, come a longs and lumber we have begun clearing the ditch.
Join us Sunday October 18th at 1pm for an interpretive tour with our volunteer guides immersing into the granite industry of Becket, Chester and Otis.
