We took to the old rail bed of the Chester and Becket Railroad yesterday for a history tour with interpretive guide hike leader Liz on how “the granite line” was built by local farmers with oxen and cart in 1897..the who’s who businessmen of Chester and Becket proposed this line, and it led to all prospering from it, from Charcoal City in Becket to the granite finishing mills in Chester Factory Village. Keeping Hilltown History Alive, thank you to Upper Housatonic Valley National Heritage Area for sponsoring this event and our hike leaders and volunteers Stephanie and Greg for leading today’s journey!
