In July 1844, Henry David Thoreau, at age 27, made a solitary ascent of Mount Greylock, Massachusetts’ highest peak, embarking on a personal pilgrimage that would later influence his conservationist vision. He followed a route similar to today’s Bellows Pipe Trail, experiencing a transformative moment above the clouds. Lead by Interpretive Coordinator Mike Whalen, we made the same journey up Bellows Pipe..
Thoreau walked through the Wilbur farm and up the Bellows Pipe Trail, an area shaped by both human activity and natural forces. He reached the summit at sunset and slept in a makeshift shelter near the observatory tower. Thoreau’s experience on Greylock fostered a deeper appreciation for nature, which he wrote in his books Walden; Life in the Woods.
