Hiking Hilltown History, the 1955 flood completely destroyed the junction of Route 23 and Route 20 in Russell stranding both Blandford and Russell residents from Westfield. Driving Route 23 today on the rebuilt road, you would never know that below in the gulch lies the original road as some of the pavement remains.
