Chester Veterans Bridge
1850 At a meeting of the Inhabitants of Chester qualified to vote in Town affairs holden on the 11th day of November 1850 the following vote was passed:

Article 2 Chose David Cannon, Wm. Sheppard and E. G. Howe a committee to Suprintend the rebuilding of the Bridge at Chester Factories this comming season.

Voted This Committee be authorized to build such a Bridge at C. Factories as they shall judge best for the Interest of the Town, but NOT to put a roof over the same.

1895. Contract was made with George W. Smith of Westfield, to build the abutments and piers for both the Main and Maple street bridges, according to specifications furnished by the engineers for $3,745.00

Contract was made with R. F. Hawkins of Springfield, to build a two-span bridge at Main street and remove the old Main street bridges to Maple street, according to plans and call for proposals for $6,300.00

1971  Construction began in 1970 and was completed in 1971. The contractor was Puffer Construction Co., Sunderland, Mass. Total cost of bridge was $217,460.00. The town’s share of the cost was $10,980.00. At the dedication ceremonies held on May 31, 1971 the bridge was named Veterans Bridge. Courtesy Chester Historical Commission
