Shatterack Falls #1 on Shatterack Brook. Avoiding the deep snow here in Blandford, Becket, Chester and Washington we ventured out to Russell and the base of Tekoa Mountain where the old Pochassic Road runs along the Westfield River on the John Murphy Memorial Trail, named so for the Firefighter who bravely gave his life fighting the Tekoa Mountain forest fire in 1999. 3.4 miles in and back starting from behind burned up Strathmore Mill heading left through the yellow gate at the Tekoa Wildlife Management Area to his memorial cross. Rolling terrain and great hiking without climbing the mountain, spurs off of this trail continue to the English Grass Cave, the Tekoa Cliffs and the Shatterack Waterfall Trail. The Savage Cellar hole and barn can be found along this trail. Photos and video by Karen Sikes McTaggart
