#1 “Pot Holes” in Becket, by far the most interesting, historical geological find by far.
What we have learned so far…when the earth was covered in glaciers, from the melt water on warm days or just a melt spot, a stream
would form and tunnel down to the rock bed below and if a boulder dropped down with the water (since boulders were carried in the ice sheets) it would scour out a hollow. These potholes are verticle in the rock walls except for the largest we found out of 5 this day, which is more like a big cauldron shape. The largest at least 100 feet in diameter, none smaller than 40 feet in diameter. Some of the walls have caved in on the larger potholes (also called glacier mills or glacial cavities), but those walls remain with the same curvature and smooth walls. Hiking in this gorge is like a step back into the ice age. We took many photos, posts are split up to each pothole. Here is the gorge and a few shots with people for size reference, look for the next posts for each of the 5 potholes we found. Photos contributed by Liz, Dayna and Tom Hoffman.
