Here is the Monument erected by the friends of JOHN GLEDE JR who died instantly killed on this spot by the overturning of a cart on June 1, 1847 aged 17 Yrs. The Glede Monument made of white marble is located near Andrew’s Corner, at the intersection of Rt. 20 Jacob’s Ladder Scenic Highway and Rt. 8 south (Otis Road); it marks the site of a fatal accident on June 1, 1847. Young Johnny Glede and his father were racing their ox teams while working on an adjacent farm. The wheel of the boy’s cart hit a stone and tipped over, killing him instantly. His father and neighbors erected the monument to mark the accident. This may have been the first fatal accident on Jacob’s Ladder Road. In 2015, the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission along with the Becket Historical Commission restored the monument.
