The sugar bush trail for over 200 years the maple trees here were tapped to make syrup and continue to be to this day. Who drove their car and left it there is the big question? Interesting what we find in the woods! The sugar house remains show stone building walls and the ramp used to load the sap and syrup.

The Bryant Cemetery, we made our way up Trow Road admiring more old growth trees to the cemetery where William Cullen Bryant’s maternal grandparents Ebenezer Snell and Sarah Packard Snell are buried also his father Peter Bryant. Take time to read the inscriptions, they tell tales, wishes and cause of death in some cases.

The Rivulet Trail, a certified old growth forest with the 102.4 foot wild black cherry 2nd tallest in the state! Hardwood forest upwards of 300 years old, sugar maples, yellow birch, white ash, american beech, giant hemlocks and the white pine forest 150 to 175 years old two which are 150 feet tallest in this state!

Thank you to all who came out to our July Group Hike of the Rivulet Trail at the William Cullen Bryant Homestead in Cummington. The enormous trees in the old growth forest had us all looking upwards during the entire one mile loop. Part 2 of the hike thru the Sugarbush trail and on to Bryant Cemetery where we found the gravesites of William Cullen Bryant’s father and maternal grandparents. Michele educated us on mushrooms. There was even a little bit of antique car knowledge. Thank you to our hike leaders Michele, Kim, and Karen and a poetry reading by Greg.
