The old Strathmore Mill #1 closed more than twenty years ago. It’s mark is left forever in the village of Woronoco, which once was a bustling community, not just an employer, a generation. Hike leader Karen told us stories of how she would pick up Dad from work at a particular door. The stock house is across from the main entrance. The old iron building details still exist, including the lighting ball and the electrical works. Fine brick work line the roof tops. The room made entirely of glass must of been an amazing lookout. Located on Old Route 20. #hilltownhistory #russellma #hikethehilltowns with the #westernmasshilltownhikers

Your trecks are bringing back memories like crazy. The water department wanted to shut off the water to #1 mill which was close to the main enterance to #1 mill .We thought it would be easy but it got real complicated because of burried telephone lines and lack of space and not wanting to tear up the road. There was a valve on the line but after so many years in the open position and the barnicle build up,it wouldn’t close tight enough but we didn’t want to have to shut the town down at a later date.We exposed the valve that had a date on it of 1906.We took the top half off, cleaned and disassembled the insides, then reassembled the valve using the same bolts and even the same gasket and when pressure was restored it didn’t leak a bit.Try doing that with a modern valve. The other thing to think about is can you imagine how many accidents there would be if old RT20 was still in use today? The corners leading into town, the close quarters between the stock house and the mill itself, trucks trying to back into loading docks, and the corners going out of town would make for an dangerous ride.
