Tannery Falls in Savoy on Friday to cool down at this epic 70 foot waterfall and complete the loop over to Parker Brook Falls (a hike in itself in a separate post!). We started from the summer only Tannery Road parking lot where you hike along Ross Brook in a cool natural rock sluiceway then down beautiful stairs to the base of Tannery Falls. A short hike to the bottom and back up but the real treat is finding the complete loop for Parker Brook Falls for a one mile loop to one of the most magnificent places we have seen!
In 1843, the area near Tannery Falls was utilized as a tannery where animal hides went through a process called “tanning” to produce leather. Tanneries were a foul-smelling business forced to locate away from populated areas. This tannery was also placed in its remote location due to the abundance of Hemlock Trees in the surrounding area. Eastern Hemlock is one of the most common tree species in the state, and these trees provided tannic acid which was used in the tanning process.
