A TRIBUTE TO TRAILBLAZERS In the 1960’s two men from Westfield State set out on a journey heading West to white blaze and map an old Native Footpath across the Hilltowns called Unkamit’s Path. Most of the path runs through public property to connect the New England Trail to the Appalachian Trail, it is a great route however Henry Warchol and John Murphy did not officially sanction the route (it was 1960, not as much politics!). Today the non-profit group Highlands Footpath founded about 15 years ago by the Hilltown hiker who’s who including myself, is officially designating this route (with some variations) as seen at the Chester Blandford State Forest and Round Top Hill in Chester. The photos of red yarn on the trail are where the white paint ran out, so red yarn was used to blaze. If you are lucky, you may still find some! A complete CD exists with all maps and notes and is part of the Hilltown Hikers Collection. John and Henry, you will be missed and honored forever!
