Benoit Helie, Elden Holland, Francis Kippenberger, James Lavey and Ralph Penta. died on Sunday, December 16th, 1934.
The five were members of the 196th Civilian Conservation Corps Company which was based at Sandisfield State Forest. They were killed when the truck that was taking them to church in Great Barrington skidded out of control on the fresh snow and overturned.
The accident occured on Route 23 on Three Mile Hill near what is now Butternut Basin.

Part 2 of Saturday’s group hike was the ceremony given every year on this date by the DCR, the worst accident ever and the most deaths in any CCC Camp.@MassDCR
