Monument Mountain on Route 7 in Great Barrington offers great full day hiking on both the ridge and an undermountain trail. A Trustees property, the mountain has long inspired works of art and literature, including William Cullen Bryant’s 1815 poem, “Monument Mountain.” Authors Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville spent an afternoon on the mountain and found motivation for future works, including Moby-Dick. The summit at 1,645 feet Peeskawso Peak has amazing 360 views of Mount Greylock and West to the Catskill Mountains. The summit trail is a maze of boulders with just feet to get across with 70 foot drops on each side making this hike both a bit scary and also exhilarating! Stone steps on sandstone wind up the mountain. The devil’s pulpit is awe inspiring and you might just find your way on a trail to sit on the Man of the Mountain’s head perched up on the edge! The connector trail gets you to Flag Rock which we hiked first in the day for group hike, completing both sides of the mountain in one day. Always a great hike here! The Trustees
