John Newcomb of Albany, NY, a veteran Army Air Corps radioman during World War II, was employed by the Monticello Aircraft Company to fly a twin-engine Cessna plane (NC-60558) to deliver late editions of New York Daily Mirror newspaper from New York City to Albany every night. Weather conditions for that night veere low visibility, fog, rain and drizzle. The plane crash occurred between 9 and 11:30pm. In the week following the report of his missing flight Army and Navy rescue planes covered a 100-mile search area, including Greylock, and were unable to locate any sign of the plane, obscured by a heavy cover of foliage. Four months later, on December 7, 1948, three deer hunters discovered the scattered wreck and the body of John Newcomb. Inside the cabin were bundles of the Daily Mirror dated August 13, the clock on the instrument panel had stopped at 7:19 (pm).

Rounds Rock at Mount Greylock State Reservation coming up from the South side its the first trail loop with some spectacular views in just a mile. At 2,566 feet of elevation this trail is for everyone with two vistas and a plane crash memorial site and a boundary stone. Jabez Rounds once farmed this land in the early 1800s. Views are of Peru and Round Top Hill in Chester and the Catskills of New York, Hancock and more! One of my favorites here!
