Williams College Harris Cabin – Mt. Mount Greylock State Reservation In 1932, a cabin was built between Mt. Williams and Mt. Fitch. This cabin was built by the CCC, the Williams Outing Club purchased the cabin in memory of Norman Harris a Williams Graduate (1931) who perished in a car accident shortly after graduating. Organized Outing Club trips and individual Outing Club members used the cabin extensively in the mid-late 1940’s and into the early 1950’s. In addition, the Harris Memorial Cabin was used by Appalachian Trail hikers until October 1962, when it was burned down by vandals during Halloween. Mount Greylock State Reservation flash hike up Mount Williams. Hiking on the North side of Greylock for the day we got on the Appalachian Trail where it crosses Notch Road at the Wilbur’s Clearing kiosk heading South to make the climb on this very rocky section. A few switchbacks lead you to the summit and an easterly view from an outcrop which is overgrown but when the leaves fall would be great! From the summit at 2,951 feet, we continued the master ridge of the Greylock Range south, leaving the AT for the Old Summit Road Trail which is a 2.5-mile descent, dropping 1,483 feet, an average grade of 11 percent.
