The H. Newman Marsh Trail in Chester Blandford State Forest just in from the Sanderson Brook Falls parking lot on Route 20 is an exhilarating climb with 700 feet of elevation to the Memorial Loop. Cross the brook at the top following the signage to the loop around Observation Hill with three vistas overlooking the Westfield River Valley both East and West! We continued onto Observation Hill Rd thru the State Forest for a big 5 mile loop, onto the CCC Ski Trail and then back down Sanderson Brook Road by the Falls. H. Newman Marsh is remembered forever as one of the greatest Hilltown Legends, saving the Chester Railstation, creating the Country Journal Newspaper, founding the Jacob’s Ladder Scenic Byway designation and so much more, devoting his life to the Hilltowns of Western Mass!
