Tekoa Mountain offers up great hiking and exploring in Russell. The lower trail from behind Strathmore Mill runs along the base of the cliffs before it reaches the Westfield River. Fires have swept through here several times, the rock from the cliffs above have tumbled down over centuries and the existing cracks and crevises are shelter for the bear and coyote which are prevalent here. Tulip trees and American Chestnut grow here. Mass Fish and Wildlife conservation call it the Tekoa Wildlife Preserve. Caves like the Cat Cave, Cat Tunnel, Bent Birch Tallus cave are here as well, some with large rooms big enough to hold 10 people comfortably! We will take you inside those caves, on a future adventure!
