A historic afternoon hosted by Western Mass Hilltown Hikers for the Upper Housatonic Valley National Heritage Area narrated by our special guest and Washington Historical Commission member Tom Hoffman with ten descriptive stops inside October Mountain State Forest to learn about the settlers who lived on the mountain including the Navin Family who did not sell their land to William Whitney, rejected the offer in 1896. Michael Navin Jr. Felt the land was more valuable for the lumber on it. He was an immigrant from Ireland in 1849, in 1854 he and his brothers purchased three lots on Washington Mountain. The grew potatoes and logged the thick forest. By 1899, Whitney had owned all the land surrounding Navin in Lee and Washington.
