Part 3 Mount Race and the cliffs on the AppalachianTrail total mileage in and back 8.2 miles covering all five Falls, seven hours and 1,200 feet of elevation gain!
Race Brook Falls in Sheffield Flash Hike Saturday. The falls were named after William Race, an early pioneer who lived in the valley in the mid-1700s. Race was involved in a rent dispute and was killed by a party of debt-collectors sent by land baron Robert Livingston. Formed on Race Brook, a small stream between Mt. Race and Mt. Everett. The waterfalls consist of a series of five cascades, with the first (the lowermost) being the largest and most spectacular at nearly 100 feet high. The second fall, which is 30 feet high and fairly inclined, can be seen just upstream from the top of the first fall. Farther up is the third fall, which is actually a series of smaller cascades totaling well over 30 feet in height. The fourth fall is absolutely gorgeous, with water cascading 60 feet down onto boulders that are brown and covered with algae and green moss. The fifth fall, like the third cascade, consists of a series of smaller cascades, totaling 30 feet or more. You can choose to hike just the lower Falls trail .5 miles or go for all 5 with a difficult one mile climb all the way up on rocks and roots on the edges of drops, at the 5th fall on top there is a great vista! Give yourself 4 hours for the entire falls including all the vistas, take it slow and you will accomplish it! Take it up a notch and go 2.1 miles to the campsite and then another mile up to the Appalachian Trail, take a left South and head to Mount Race with rock scrambles, go another 800 feet from the big cairn at Mount Race to the grand overlook atop the cliffs! Parking on Route 41 at the kiosk. #sheffieldma
