Old Whisky Still of Colonial Times. Another claim to fame for the section surrounding Falley’s armory was an old illicit distillery, hidden deep in the primeral forest a short distance northwest of the old armory. Here the forbears of some of Westfield’s families of the present day once distilled hard liquor and defied the Colonial authorities to “wipe out the sorry nuisance.” Liquor was considered a necessity in those days and when agents of the royal governor sought to limit its production or to prevent it altogether, Colonists living in and about Westfield disliked this arrangement and set about producing it in private and succeeded admirably. There is no record that the old still ever was discovered. This was the only structure we found NW of Falley’s Armory. #montgomeryma
