flashhike at Schermerhorn Gorge, located in Lenox at October Mountain State Forest, trailhead on Woodland Road across from Woods Pond. This trail is just under 3 miles up the the gorge and back down the other side. Trail is very steep with stone steps. The history of CCC here during the great depression is still evident as this area was the main attraction. This gorge was a favoite Berkshire picnic spot with several firepits and picnic areas built, there were also three bridges across Felton Brook here. The original Schermerhorn Drive ran adjacent to the trail (washed out) present day paved on the other side, at the top of the falls you come to Felton Pond once called Schermerhorn Pond. Big Foot sightings here have been common! The enormous hemlock and Hardwood here are amazing! An old saw mill still stands here today near the top. This trail intersects with the Switchback Trail and Felton Trail at the top. October Mountain State Forest is the largest in the State.
