Climbing the trail to the top of Mt. Alander for the first time on a clear day is an experience you will always remember!
Starting from Mount Washington State Forest Headquarters its a moderate to strenuous climb for almost three miles until you reach the South Taconic Trail blazed white and then carry on to where the rocky ground (with some rattlesnakes) once had a fire tower. You pass the state cabin between the south and north peaks, climb stone steps thru mountain laurel on your way up. There’s very little water here for dogs so bring plenty. Views to the West of the Catskills and even some of the taller buildings in Albany as well as a complete 360 degree view that will make your day. At 2,250 feet of elevation you won’t be dissapointed but bring maps and GPS because this is wild country with little to no cell coverage.
