Great Barrington’s East Rock is not falling! Folklore over the years has believed …this balanced 6 foot high 10 foot long 50 ton boulder “must” eventually fall. Stories like the Boston Post 1906 “Big Rock Threatens Lives” have been written but it stays in place! William Cullen Bryant himself wrote about it and it used to be in clear view from below in the Brooklyn section of Barrington. A very steep half mile hike up East Mountain from Quarry Road offers up amazing views whether you climb the ladder or not. Also known as Prospect Rock, it commands views of the Catskills, Mount Everett, Mount Race and the entire valley between East Mountain and the southern Taconics. Check out the carvings going back over 100 years!
