On one of the last cold days this year we explored some of the Becket State Forest and it’s old abandoned farms, at the far edge of state property lies the Keefe Granite Quarry. The old road to this quarry came from the old Cushman Road where the white with black speckled granite was hauled out by team.
“The first granite was laid in the Holyoke dam, October 3rd and pronounced plumb and level by Sir Knight James Sickmann, the engineer. The stone was shipped from Chester and pronounced a superior quality and was quarried in the southeast part of Becket, T. Keefe’s quarry, where there is an unlimited supply. Previous to laying the granite there was laid about 3500 cubic feet of rubble stone and 600 cubic yards of concrete. The cement used is the alpha Portland cement. The contractors employ 150 men at Holyoke and about 40 men at the quarry getting out the stone.”
