Deep in the lush hillside of the South Eastern corner of Adams, Tophet Brook flows in a deep gorge.  Like most old colonial roads, this one is discontinued, the bridge built in the 1850’s to connect Adams to Savoy was no longer passable.  The old Harrington/Fritz farmstead was across Tophet Brook and was eventually abandoned and the town, after much discussion no longer maintained the road and bridge. High Bridge is constructed of dry-laid natural stone and stands 26 feet tall. The bridge’s second support across the deep Tophet Brook chasm collapsed and by 1974 the bridge became impassable. The Fritz family, left with no access to their 370 acres, filed a lawsuit against the Town of Adams whose responsibility it was to maintain the structure. Instead of rebuilding the bridge, the old road was repaired and modified to connect the property with East Hoosac Street near the Savoy border. Without access to the property, the farm buildings and house have deteriorated to an unrepairable state. Almost all the fields have become overgrown. Adams Historical Society.
