The Hampden Corrundum and Emery Mills encompassed Hampden Street where it meets present day Route 20. There were several other mills along this stretch of Walker Brook, using it’s water to power these large mill complexes. Emery mining and its processing dominated the commercial industry in the late 1800’s in Chester, employing hundreds and monopolizing the emery industry using it’s rich mineral natural resources like no where else in the country. To this day, Chester still holds within its mountains massive amounts of emery and other natural rock and minerals!
