The Knittel Conservation Area in Blandford, lovely hiking in any season with well marked (white metal and big arrows) trails on flat ground. Get up close to this large beaver habitat at the pond area where these beavers have been hard at work for years. Parking off and on street on Herrick Road just off Route 23. A kiosk marks the trail start, for both sides of the road…trails are on both sides of Herrick and each are very different. Friday’s flash hike was around the beaver pond, a three mile loop including a stop at the Kyanite outcrop along the way for a bit of rockhounding. This trail is always good, snowshoeing is excellent here and the mountain laurel blooms profusely in June. This property borders the Springfield watershed.
