The sandwashing works. Our Saturday flash hike was attending the Washington Historic Commission sponsored hike to 2 quarries on the Ashley Trail near Ashley Lake led by our good frlend Tom Hoffman at October Mountain State Forest. One was the source of quartz sand for making glass in Lenox Dale and Sandwich MA in the 1800’s. The other is of unknown origin and usage.
We had the unexpected pleasure of having Charles Flint come along, and share his extensive knowledge of the quarry and crushing-washing operation. We also visited beautiful Sandwash Reservoir, and its aerator. Finding these historical locations off trail is amazing! Always a pleasure hiking with Tom Berenski too! Courtesy of Tom Hoffman.
