HILLTOWN HISTORY questions answered. Recently on a trip to Stanley Park in Westfield the Montgomery Falley Armory Millstones were found at the Meeting House, however not named or with a sign of recognition. We received an answer from Victoria L. Connor, Managing Director of The Stanley Park of Westfield and are assured the plaque which is inside the meeting house will be brought outside to mark the stones. From the Westfield Evening News 1974 By Deb Baker: Two of the 10-ton stones, dated carious resting place near the lower reservoir on the Westfield-Montgomery line moved to a more observable and protected site in Stanley Park.
Dr. Alfred N. Aborjaily, owner of the armory site, said the donation to Stanley park was made in the best interests of preserving one of the city’s most valuable historical assets.”It might sound impossible.” Aborjaily said, “but I could see someone coming up and digging the stones out of the ground and carting them off.” In weighing a decision as to where the stones could be exposed to the public and property maintained, Aborjaily opted for Stanley park as a place for a lasting memorial to one of the City’s most colorful and productive patriots. Catch our group hike to the armory in June!
