October Mountain State Forest, our version of Pine Cone Johnnies! The CCC had 51 camps and 10,000 workers . The first year was spent setting up campsite and making access roads
The Johnnies worked forest management, fire hazard reduction, pest control, wildlife enhancement and recreational development.
Created by FDR under the New Deal as an answer to the Great Depression from 1933-1941. The two part goal was “conservation of our natural resources and the salvage of our young men.”
