The old County Road in Montgomery was the road across Shatterack Mountain from Russell to Montgomery. The present day road is Lower Russell Road, closed in winter and is where the Shatterack Ridge Trail Head is located. Going back in time on the County Road where the ruts were made by wagon wheels, the massive trees lining the road, a unique old well, cellar hole and barn foundations, passing the Brant Lot which was grazing land with a glorious view of the Westfield River Valley and West to the village of Huntington. Karen bought me the Ethel Helms memoir book last Christmas and has a treasure trove of old photos here keeping the Hilltown History alive!
