Unkamit’s Path Section #7 in Russell, always my favorite! This trail is named after an Indian guide who led settlers through the Westfield River valley during the colonial period. The route is described in nine sections from west to east, and connects the Appalachian Trail in Washington to the New England Trail in Westfield. The total estimated mileage is 44 ¼ miles. Folks come to thru hike this trail from far, mostly on public property as it was blazed in the 1960’s, some changes in the route has been made since. A good starting point for this section is on Reservoir Road in Westfield, just after crossing the bridge over Moose Meadow Brook look for the white blaze on your left then follow it up the ridge of Tekoa Mountain. Be sure to hike the Chester section now officially blazed as the Highlands Footpath!
