Hawthorne cave and kissing rock. Monument Mountain in Great Barrington, make no mistake the climb up the Hickey Trail to the Squaw Peak Trail is steep! This 555 acre Trustees West Region property where Hawthorne and Melville (inspired Moby Dick) met in 1850 and 30 years previous William Cullen Bryant came here and wrote his poem “Monument Mountain”. Cliffs, ledges and mines are found here including Hawthorne Cave, Kissing Boulder and Inscription Rock. Hickey trail is just under a mile, Squaw Peak (now called Peeskawso) trail along the ridge to Devil’s Pulpit is .72 miles of mostly bouldering with a 70 foot drop on either side. The spur to Devil’s Pulpit is short and steep with outstanding views, a spur to the left offers more views as you are standing on the man ofthe Mountain outcropping. Additional trails here are the lower loop Mohican Monument Trail, here it connects at the Cross Over Trail with the Flag Rock Willow Trail, trek even farther on the Agawam Wildlife Mgmt Area Mass Wildlife trail. Hiking with Russ and Tom, no shortage of elevation and spectacular sights hiking this one after our Flag Rock Group hike with Christy Butler pushing the limits!
