Mount Sugarloaf State Reservation in South Deerfield, here for Ronnie’s eye appointment, the #mountainsarecallingandimustgo kinda thing. The Mt. Sugarloaf Dance Hall, also known as the Dance Pavilion, once stood at the foot of the mountain. For a few cents, the Connecticut River Valley street railway (visible in lower right corner) provided easy access, and its open-aired cars were a good way for nature enthusiasts to cool off after a hike up and down Sugarloaf. Large enough to hold more than 100 patrons, the hall hosted many concerts and dances that visitors fondly recalled half a century later. Roller skaters flocked to the hall as early as 1911. The hall was transformed into a base camp for men of the Civilian Conservation Corp, as they worked to carve out the road to the summit in 1938. An extremely popular-though sometimes problematic-attraction in its day, the dance hall began to acquire the reputation of being “a trouble center.” During the Prohibition era, the hall was closed down several times due to mischief.
