The Otis Reservoir Dam was constructed in 1865 as a water power supply for manufacturing companies along the Farmington River. The Reservoir is the largest recreational water body in Massachusetts covering more than 1,050 acres and at normal level holding over 8 billion gallons. The Fall River Trail runs a steep 1.5 miles, the trail head is located at the dam (the one lane bridge on Tolland Road). Look for a foot path going downhill off the road. The trail passes Otis Falls at the dam and forks at a scenic point at Larkum Pond. The right leg terminates at private Camp Nawaka, while the left leg runs upland through farmland. The waterfall’s appearance is entirely dependent upon how much water is being released from the reservoir. When water is being discharged from the reservoir, the waterfall becomes a dynamic 40-foot-high cascade. The Otis Reservoir was built in 1866, expanding a 318-acre pond into a 1,050-acre reservoir. When full, its water level is 26 feet. Mill remains can still be seen at the foot of the falls. Historical dam photos by Jim Moore. We spent hours here!
