One of the four quartz mines in Chester, this is Linda’s property high up on Prospect Hill above the village, we set out with Jim Moore local expert to study this. The mine is an open cut, with a cave-in down the middle. We found one metal spike in the wall but most interesting is the three block cut outs on the left side for wooden ties, could be for a winch to pull up from the shaft. Sociolo Road was called Mill Street and most likely the quartz was taken to James Keefe’s mill by team for processing. The mining road is stone lined and on the edge of the cliff. There are two balance rocks here, two wells, a spring and the most beautiful, intricate stone walls! Thank you to Linda for having us come and look out for a hike here too!
