Our Group Hike Saturday, we crossed the beaver swamp and followed the old Mountain House Road lined by 100+ year old maple trees untill we reached 1200 feet of elevation where the large Moore Mountain House once stood, the first tourist hot spot in Western Mass in the late 1800’s complete with barn and silo where folks once enjoyed croquet and hay rides, great fishing, fresh farm to table meals and the crisp mountain air here in Montgomery. We then continued to Moose Meadow Pond, the Grist Mill, Whip factory and the Westfield Reservoir which in its creation was the demise of the Mountain House. The reservoir was taken out of use as a primary water supply for Westfield in 1972. History has run its course, the wild beauty of the hilltop Moore Mountain House remains.
