Western Mass Hilltown Hikers Group Hike

Group Hike to the Spencer Homestead, Old Dayville in Chester
Saturday May 29th at 10:00 am
GPS Location:  42.30219  -72.90484 Parking      Hike Rating: Moderate     3 miles in and back

Dayville, Chester was once a village, taken off the map when the Littleville Lake and Dam was built to provide back up water supply to Springfield.  Twenty homes, nine farms, one church, fire station, and two cemeteries were taken.  The goal was a combination flood control/water supply for the City of Springfield.  A part of South Worthington Road was flooded including the bridge that connected to East River Road. Skyline Trail was built instead with heavy criticism, the people wanted a road along the lake which would of brought recreation and been a scenic attraction.  This was deemed too expensive and never happened.  Littleville is present day backup water supply to the City of Springfield and does not supply any water to any hilltown communities.  There is no swimming or power boating allowed.

Park along Kinnebrook Road and meet at the Littleville Fair entrance gate(do not block the gate).  Plan for three hours hike time. Be prepared for water, rocks, downed trees and mud on the trail and one steep incline. Trail is not blazed.  There is NO cell service at the trail. We will hike as a group.  Maps and bottle water will be provided.  Please be aware that there are no facilities at the trail.  More details are on Facebook and the website. Friendly dogs are welcome!
