Group Hike of Moore Mountain House in Montgomery September 25th 10:00am
GPS Location: 42.196324, -72.816997 Parking Hike Rating: Easy 2.4 miles in and back
The Massachusetts Legislature passed an act authorizing the City of Westfield to construct a reservoir system in the Town of Montgomery occupied by only 318 residents. Land was taken and two reservoirs were created. The larger reservoir was just south of the *Mountain House,* a 40 guest summer hotel established in 1873. Water flowed from this reservoir to a smaller reservoir at the foot of Mt. Tekoa and piped to the city. Go back in time and hike to explore the large cellar holes filled with pieces of history, further down the trail we wll see the old dams including the largest mostly intact hand laid stone dam, saw mill, grist mill and a whip factory. The Mountain House was torn down in 1916. This hike also includes a beautiful swamp with beaver activity and stone wall lined old roads. Read more about our destination here Mountain House CJ story
Meet at the trailhead parking area on the corner of Tekoa Road and Mountain House Road. The trail starts here. Plan for three hours hike time. We will hike in to the old stone dam and along some of the reservoir. Be prepared for water, rocks and mud on the trail. Maps and bottle water will be provided.
