Washington’s newest trail Coles Brook Preserve Headwaters Trail is officially open giving the public an easy approach to one of The Nature Conservancy’s larger tracts in Berkshire County.  The trail sits in the 1,500-acre Coles Brook Preserve, which straddles Washington and Middlefield. It’s the newest marked pathway for hikers and nature lovers to enjoy on the land that protects much of Coles Brook, which runs from Benson Pond to the middle branch of the Westfield River.  The Nature Conservancy spent $350,000 to buy parcels totaling 160 acres that this trail crosses. It also spent about $23,000 to pay laborers to construct the trail, and received $10,000 from the Fields Pond Foundation to help with the trail. The loop is just over two miles with some interesting sights to see including several cellar holes, a water trough, rewilded homestead, bridges and sculpture…yes sculpture!
