Most of you have hiked the Keystone Arch Bridges Trail to the extreme southern point of Middlefield where the counties of Hampden, Hampshire and Berkshire meet. Views from the Alderman Farm high above bring a different perspective of the Westfield River valley.  In this picturesque spot settled Thomas Root of Enfield, Connecticut. Two sons, Salomon and Daniel, married soon after the family located here and their father built them a double log house some distance back from the river, the foundations of which have long remained in evidence on the Pontoosac Turnpike.  Tradition has it that Solomon’s wife was much superior to Daniel’s wife because the single window in her end of the house had one more pane than that at the other end!
