On Sunday we welcomed author Bob Madison to talk about his rails-to-trails book which helps to preserve the history of the canal and the railroad. Lost or forgotten rail systems all of a sudden have become popular recreational areas for the enjoyment of all.  The Canal Greenway takes the bicyclist or hiker on a historic trip through sixteen towns into the interior of Western New England – – from New Haven, CT to Northampton, MA. His rails-to-trails book is a comprehensive guide which includes trail maps, trailhead descriptions, original watercolor paintings by the author, attractions, distances and a little history of each of the sixteen towns along with the history of the canal and the railroad as the modern rail trail works its way along some 80 plus miles or 87-mile canal length.

Bob Madison’s second book is about the untold service of Lt. Richard Falley and the military career of a Western Massachusetts Patriot in time to celebrate our country’s 250th Anniversary. Falley supplied flintlock muskets from his secret armory at Mt. Tekoa in the foothills of the Berkshires.

Bob is an outdoor enthusiast who has lived in Western Massachusetts most of his life. He was educated and employed in both Connecticut and Massachusetts. Bob uses his watercolor paintings to help readers of his book visualize what it was like to travel through New England in the early 1800’s. Bob lived in Woronoco in his early years. He also attended K- 8th grade at the old Russell Elementary School in Russell on Main Street. Years ago, it was a 4-room school with 2 grades per room with only 1 teacher.
