Jani Leverett was a Native American of Choctaw-Cherokee lineage and president of Friends of Mohawk Trail State Forest. She was known for her work in defending Native American rights, protecting the environment, and pursuing world peace.
She was Director of the American Indian Movement for Massachusetts, an elder, and a Native poet. She especially loved the stately pines of Mohawk Trail State Forest and actively promoted their ecological, historical, cultural, aesthetic, and research value.Her vision, leadership, and service to citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are hereby recognized by the Department of Conservation and Recreation
