INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL day at Wright Memorial Forest in Chester with Wild and Scenic Westfield River Meredyth Babcock and UMASS new grads.  A collaboration of the Hilltown Hikers (stewards of Wright Memorial) and New England Forestry Foundation with Wild and Scenic to remove Barberry and Multiflora Rose on Abbott Brook, caused by a broken culvert upstream.  The stone and washout is as high as the CSX rail tracks! The upstream problem is causing sediment to flow downstream bringing all kinds of problems to it’s junction with the Westfield River.  It was just announced this past Monday at Chester Selectboard that the grant to repair the Chester culvert was DENIED.  We learned how to use the Puller Bear tool to remove the weeds, then gather and stack them on a crib to die. WE CAN ALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Learn more at our fall/winter classes part of the Hilltown Hikers Educational Series!
