WHATS THE MEANING of Ashuwillticook?  It is an old Native American word meaning river between the hills. The river is the Hoosic and the hills are the Hoosac Mountains (each spelled differently but pronounced the same) The earliest printed example of the word Ashuwilticook appears on a 1739 map survey of the area around the south branch of the Hoosic River where a notation appears “Ashulwithcook Branch”. Bike, hike or paddle, check out the great informative kiosks along the way including Cheshire’s history on the Berkshire Street Railway and more!
