Stevens in 1902 opened a box factory on East Street in Great Barrington. His shop also made doors, windows and moldings. The Great Barrington shop closed in 1937.Stevens had later portable sawmills that ran by steam power. Stevens bequeathed his land at Lake Buel to the Berkshire County Boy Scout Council. When the Scouts no longer had a use for Camp Stevens, it was offered to the town. Voters rejected the offer at annual meeting in March 1949, so the Council sold it. (Bernie Drew) The dam remains to power the sawmill can be seen along the Appalachian Trail, in fact the trail is the dam. Also, curious wells can be found southeast of the trail, east of the dam. Were these for camps near the lake? Amazing how much history you can find in the woods!
