Saturday’s FlashHike took us to the beautiful Schermerhorn Gorge at October Mountain State Forest from the Lee side, trailhead and parking on Woodland Road.  This gorge was once a tourist destination with picnic areas built by the CCC in the 1930’s to improve the state forest.  Evidence of the colonists exist here also with an old bridge abutment and a saw mill complete with a sluice way to harness the water power.  The Schermerhorn Gorge Trail runs on both sides of the gorge with stone steps giving hikers an enjoyable 500 feet of elevation gain with glorious views of the waterfalls the entire way for the 3.5 mile loop.  We continued on to Felton Trail and Pond to see the boyscout camp remains after the gorge for a 5.5 mile total loop.
